As reported by The Associated Press (AP), Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes spoke about the ongoing investigation.

“Identifying a motive is our top priority, but at this time it appears that the motive is a combination of factors,” he stated during a press briefing.

The shooting was carried out using a handgun. Police are currently working to determine how Rupnow obtained the firearm and whether it was legally owned.

Chief Barnes also mentioned that investigators are looking into whether the firearm was owned or possessed by Rupnow’s parents.

“We also want to look at if the parents may have been negligent. And that’s a question that we’ll have to answer with our district attorney’s office,”

Barnes explained, adding, “But at this time, that does not appear to be the case.”

Authorities are in contact with Rupnow’s father to learn more about the events leading up to the shooting.

They hope to uncover any warning signs or possible motivations. “But again, he lost someone as well,”

Barnes said, acknowledging the immense difficulty of the situation for Rupnow’s family.

Preliminary findings suggest Rupnow was already inside the school when the attack began.

Officials have confirmed that there was no security breach.

The attack left six people injured, including two students who remain in critical condition.

According to CNN, one of the victims was a substitute teacher, while a full-time teacher was among those killed in the incident.

When asked whether Rupnow deliberately targeted her victims, Chief Barnes responded, “We don’t know if there would be a reason to target a (substitute) teacher, in this case, who doesn’t have significant ties to the school.”

Police are also analyzing Rupnow’s electronic devices, which have been handed over to FBI technicians.

Investigators aim to uncover whether she communicated her plans or hinted at the attack beforehand.

“There are always signs of a school shooting before it occurred. We’re looking into her online activity,” Barnes stated.

Daniel Brunner, a retired FBI supervisory special agent, emphasized the importance of addressing any missed opportunities to prevent the tragedy.

“If they missed a red flag and chose not to address it, if she made overt actions and overt statements that she wants to kill and they didn’t do it, that should be considered too,” he commented, urging a thorough review of the situation.

The attack has left the Abundant Life Christian School community in shock and mourning.

The nondenominational school, which serves prekindergarten through high school, has an enrollment of approximately 420 students.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Dane County Executive Joe Parisi refrained from releasing the names of the victims, citing privacy concerns.

During a press conference, Rhodes-Conway addressed the public, saying, “Leave them alone,”

Outside the school, a makeshift memorial has begun to take shape as community members pay their respects.

Mackenzie Truitt, whose brother is an alumnus of Abundant Life, placed a red poinsettia at the school’s entrance.

Reflecting on the tragedy, she shared, “My heart sunk because I know how awesome a lot of these kids are,”
