Visiting the abandoned area made these YouTubers feel ‘sick’ and ‘disgusting’
One YouTube channel took the brave decision to journey to Italy’s ‘Island of Death’ – an abandoned spot off the coast of Venice where plague victims were quarantined, a doctor performed crude lobotomies, and over 100,000 bodies are buried.
There’s just something about abandoned areas that appears so attractive to YouTubers, as exploring an area where nobody every goes – or ever wants to go – is often fascinating and chilling at the same time.
Countless videos like this have become viral on the social media platform as people crave the feeling of discovering something that has been lost to history, but this latest video from popular channel Yes Theory might just be the creepiest so far.
The pair, alongside ‘abandoned king’ Exploring With Josh, headed to Poveglia which is just a short boat ride from the romantic shores of Venice, but the so-called ‘Island of Death’ is a much less pleasant experience.
It was famously used as a quarantine station between 1793 and 1813 in which plague victims and other unfortunate individuals with infectious diseases were held at the island. It is reported that between 100,000 and 160,000 victims have been buried there, leading to theories that the island itself is haunted and host to lots of paranormal activity.
On top of this, it was later home to an asylum for the mentally ill in the 20th century, and there are alleged reports that one doctor performed lobotomy experiments on the patients that eventually led him to be driven mad by ghosts and jump off the island’s central bell tower.
It’s certainly not hard to see why many stay well clear of the island now too, as the video’s exploration of the island carries an eerie tone throughout.
Buildings falling apart, mass overgrowth, and unnerving rooms that were likely used as prison cells or hospital rooms – the whole island feels condemned to the ghosts of the past regardless of whether you believe in the paranormal or not.
Some rooms look like they’ve been ripped straight out of Silent Hill, and you certainly can’t blame the YouTubers for beginning to feel sick as they crawl through the horrifying buildings.

One of the creepiest aspects of the entire video though is the likely nature that the creators are constantly walking across mass graves, as the 100,000+ bodies were buried throughout the earth.
They state in the video that nearby islands have previously been excavated and bodily remains found, but Poveglia is yet to receive the same treatment meaning that all of the corpses are likely still found underneath.
“Every little bump in nature, you wonder if that’s a grave,” says one of the creators, and it’d be hard to ignore that thought as you’re crawling around.
It’s definitely somewhere that might not be worth a day trip if you happen to be in Venice, but thanks to the wonders of the internet we all get to experience the horrors together.
