Beandri Booysen lived with a rare and challenging condition that inspired countless people worldwide.
A South African teenager who suffered from a rare genetic condition that caused her body to age at an accelerated rate has tragically passed away at the age of 19.
Beandri Booysen, an influencer and advocate, had been diagnosed with Progeria, also referred to as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS). This extraordinarily rare condition affects only about one in four million births worldwide and is characterized by rapid aging in children.
Infants with Progeria usually appear healthy at birth but begin to show clear signs of accelerated aging within their first two years of life, often resulting in challenges that impact their physical development and overall health.
According to information from the Cleveland Clinic, Progeria not only slows down a child’s growth rate but also affects their ability to gain weight. It can lead to several other notable symptoms, such as hair loss, wrinkled skin, and a noticeable loss of fat beneath the skin, which are signs of premature aging.
Beandri, who was from South Africa, built a strong and loyal following on social media. She shared her life experiences and journey, offering a glimpse into her world and spreading awareness about her condition.
Earlier this month, on December 18, her family shared the heartbreaking news of her passing through a statement posted on Facebook. The announcement reflected the profound loss felt by her loved ones and her community of supporters.

Beandri was not only known for her vibrant personality and infectious laugh but also as the last surviving individual in South Africa living with Progeria – a rare genetic condition that causes children to age prematurely.”
They also expressed her remarkable influence and positivity, stating: “Despite the challenges she faced, Beandri radiated hope and joy. She became a symbol of awareness for Progeria and other special needs, using her unique spirit to inspire thousands of people worldwide.”
Adding to their request for privacy during this challenging time, the family wrote: “The Booysen family kindly requests privacy during this profoundly difficult time as they mourn the loss of their beloved Beandri.”
“Further details regarding the memorial service will be shared in due course.”
Her mother had shared an update on October 8 about Beandri undergoing heart surgery. She extended her gratitude to fans for their continued support, as reported by The Independent.
Following the news of her passing, social media was flooded with tributes. One heartfelt message read: “Prayers for the family for the loss of such a precious little young lady.”

Another person commented: “Condolences to all her loved ones! She was a true inspiration.”
Due to her condition, Beandri’s body aged at a rate of about eight years for every single year, giving her a bodily age of approximately 152 years, according to The Mirror.
Progeria is caused by a spontaneous mutation in the LMNA gene, as explained by MedlinePlus. While it is a genetic disorder, studies have shown it is not hereditary and does not pass from parents to children.
Currently, there is no known cure for Progeria. However, treatments are available that can help alleviate some of its symptoms and improve the quality of life for those living with the condition.
